It continues a special dispensation granted last year for the duration of the Year of Mercy -- which finished Sunday -- which gave all priests, rather than just bishops and specially designated confessors, the power to absolve the sin of abortion. ASUU consults stakeholders to prevail on FG as warning strike ends Tuesday ON NOVEMBER 21, 20166:19 PMIN EDUCATION, NEWSCOMMENTS By Dayo Adesulu As the one week warning strike of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) elapses on Tuesday midnight, the Union has said that meeting and consultations are ongoing to ensure that government does the needful. Speaking with Vanguard yesterday, ASUU-UNILAG Chairman, Dr Laja Odukoya said the one week warning strike of ASUU is still on, adding, ”it will end Tuesday 12 midnight. According to him, in its quest to avert the looming indefinite strike, ASUU has been having meetings and consultations with some stakeholders to prevail on the Federal Government, saying, ”there is a meeting on the issue in Abuja today,” (yesterday). The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) yesterday said Heritage Bank Plc is not currently in distress as being falsely insinuated by some online media. The central bank noted that there had been “false and malicious stories on the social media insinuating that Heritage Bank is under financial distress and therefore unable to discharge its obligations to its depositors.”But CBN acting Director, Corporate Communication, Mr. Isaac Okorafor explained in a statement that: “We wish to state that Heritage Bank is not in distress and as such its depositors should go about their transactions without fear. For the avoidance of doubt, we wish to further state that no Nigerian bank is in distress.“The CBN, as the industry regulator, has a duty to depositors, in particular, and the economy, in general,to ensure the soundness of all financial institutions. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) said on Monday that it would commence a warning strike on Oct. 2. Where a statement signed by Mr Ben Ugheoke, the Chairman, University of Abuja chapter of ASUU, stated that the Federal Government had failed to embark on meaningful dialogue with the union. He said “We have tried to dialogue with the Federal Government but they have been playing games with us; we will start with awarning strike to show them we are not jokers.“ ASUU has being trying to get the attention of the Federal Government to intervene in the academic system of universities across Nigeria but it has all been abortive.“Consequently, ASUU will give a warning strike which will start on Oct. 2nd.
